Eye Movement Desensitization

Seeking mental health support for coping with trauma can be difficult. The fear of confronting painful memories can feel daunting and may have kept you from seeking help to move past these traumatic experiences. Trying to deal with them on your own can also be exhausting. If you’re struggling and have found traditional therapy to be overwhelming, Salais Counseling is here to walk alongside you on your path to healing with advanced therapeutic approaches like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

What Is EMDR?

EMDR is an evidence-based therapeutic method that can reduce emotional intensity caused by trauma without years of traditional talk therapy. It’s a way for your brain to review and reprocess traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation. This may involve eye movements, tapping, sounds or other activities while you recall distressing memories.

When you experience trauma, your brain may have a difficult time processing the memory.  When triggered, traumatic memories can feel like they’re happening all over again. Instead of storing it as a regular memory, your brain treats it as a threat and it gets “stuck” in the survival part of your brain, with all the original emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs attached.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain finish processing what it couldn’t during the traumatic event. Researchers theorize that it may be similar to what happens naturally during the rapid eye movement (REM) sleep cycle, when your brain processes daily experiences. This replication of a natural process helps your brain reprocess the stuck memory and store it in a healthier way.

After EMDR, memories will feel like something that happened in the past rather than a present threat. The memories won’t completely disappear, but they’ll become less overwhelming over time, allowing you to regain your confidence and sense of safety.
